Project Description

Between 2018 and 2021, the Faculty of Health Sciences in Celje coordinated the European development and research project Quality Mentorship for Developing Competent Nursing Students (QualMent), which was selected under the Erasmus+ programme, Strategic Partnerships in Higher Education.

Project partners included: the European Federation of Nurses Associations (EFN); University of Oulu, Faculty of Medicine, Research Unit of Nursing Science and Health Management (Finland); University of Alicante, Faculty of Health Sciences (Spain); and Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (Lithuania).

The project aimed to develop a training programme for clinical mentors to ensure high-quality clinical training of undergraduate nursing students, in line with EU Directive 55. Based on research evidence, a competency model was designed, which served as the foundation for preparing the educational programme for clinical mentors.

The training programme was piloted in 2020 through lectures, workshops, and online learning. In addition, Guidelines for Developing Mentorship Competencies in Clinical Training were developed and published.

The clinical mentor training programme consists of three modules:

  1. Introduction to mentorship in nursing
  2. Cultural and linguistic diversity in mentoring nursing students
  3. Mentorship competencies in knowledge assessment and reflection
