Project Description

Between 2016 and 2018, the Faculty of Health Sciences in Celje participated in the Erasmus+ project – KA2: Cooperation for Innovation and the Exchange of Good Practices, Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education and Training – on the topic Multicultural Care in European Intensive Care Units (MICE).

The project was coordinated by the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care. Besides the Faculty of Health Sciences in Celje, the project partners included: University of Ostrava, Department of Nursing and Midwifery (Czech Republic); European Association of Intensive Care Nurses (based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands); Danmar Computers, Rzeszów (Poland); and Assist GmbH, Paderborn (Germany).

A lack of cultural awareness can jeopardize a patient’s dignity. Therefore, it is essential that healthcare staff acquire the necessary competencies. In response to these needs, the project aimed to enhance the knowledge, skills, and competencies of intensive care nurses in caring for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.

This goal was achieved through an in-depth analysis of intercultural training needs and competencies of intensive care nurses, the development of a specialized and accredited training programme for intensive care nurses, the preparation of recommendations for healthcare documentation to be used in ICUs, and broad dissemination of results across Europe.

A total of 520 intensive care nurses were directly involved in the project: 400 participated in the needs analysis, and 120 tested the developed training programme delivered via an online platform. Additional ICU nurses and healthcare professionals from different medical fields contributed through national working groups, which provided feedback on the developed materials.
