Project Description
Within the research and development project Competence of the Use of Research Knowledge in Nursing – International Evaluation and Comparison (COMPRU), an international study was conducted focusing on research competencies of nursing students and practicing nurses. The study was led by Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, School of Health Care and the University of Turku, Department of Nursing Science, Finland.
The aim of the research was to assess the competencies of nursing students and graduate nurses/health professionals in relation to research knowledge. Evidence-based practice is considered an essential tool for improving the effectiveness of nursing, with research knowledge playing a central role.
In this study, research knowledge referred to the acquisition, reading, evaluation, and application of scientific research information. The questionnaire used in the study consisted of three sections: general knowledge about research, the use of research knowledge in various situations, and the self-assessment of the ability to use research knowledge.
Participants in the study included:
- Full-time and part-time nursing students in their 6th semester, graduates, and students in clinical settings (hospitals)
- Graduate nurses/health professionals
- Head nurses
- Deputy head nurses working in internal medicine and surgical departments, both permanently and temporarily employed for more than one month
The study provided a clearer picture of the research competencies of students/nurses/health professionals and highlighted the necessary changes.
